Some experts believe that wizards and templates result in a “cookie-cutter” appearance and a lack of flexibility that can lead a job-seeker to be overlooked. Is using a wizard or template to create a resume a good idea or a bad idea? Why? Does the answer depend on the type of job? What can be done to avoid the perceived negatives attached to using a wizard or template?
I just want some opinions

I don’t think resume templates are a bad thing. I’m old enough to remember when people didn’t have computers and went to their public library to check out books on how to prepare resumes. Those books had sample resumes and people used them extensively (with needed modifications) to suit their own needs.
And I think that’s the key issue. A template can give a person some helpful guidelines but that’s all they are… guidelines. The job applicant must still tweak the template to suit his or her own education, training and skills as well as the specific job requirements.
Reviewing several templates and using the sections approriate to the person and job can result in a well written and professional looking resume. But even the best looking resume won’t help if the job seeker failed to proof read it, correct errors (spelling, grammar, dates, etc) or failed to use quality paper and envelope to submit it.
If a resume’s physical appearance (food stains, smudges, poor ink quality, wrinkles, to name just a few problem areas) doesn’t sream out “I’m a professional and your company needs me”, the words on the paper will never be read.
